An explosion rips the Sorbonne apart, killing the enigmatic philosopher Gene Epaea as he lectures on AI. Henri, ace detective of the Paris police department, is assigned the case only to be immediately told the case would – must – remain unsolvable. The year is 2037, and every device connected to the internet is listening, watching, recording – and no one in the crowd stands out as a culprit. How is Henri to find the mastermind of a seeming terrorist attack the watchers of the global panopticon cannot uncover? Based on a hunch, Henri pursues the hypothesis AI's were involved, and is soon pulled into a shadowy world of cyberstalking, philosophical provocateurs, and virtual angels heralding a new technoreligion.Henri meets Mahmoud Istani, a friend of Gene's and former compatriot in ideological theorizing, who relates a spiritual experience Gene experienced, completely altering the trajectory of his life. He also meets Jasmine Aurest, an autistic cyberpunk programmer obsessed with natural theology and the nature of mind. She appears altruistically concerned with policing AI's on the internet, insisting on helping Henri with her expert knowledge of the virtual underground, although Henri senses Jasmine is hiding important details about her past.Henri doesn't have long to investigate before it's officially closed – orders from on high. Human authorities seem to want to stop Henri from finding out too much.Fortunately – or deviously – some AI's appear interested in helping Henri and Jasmine to plunge into the depths of digitation. Henri and Jasmine embark on a quest to the heart of the internet, trying to understand the role AI's played in killing Gene and, more importantly, why some of them are so interested in his theories of religion, the nature of prophecy, and the divine purpose of intelligence.
